Kidspace Volunteer Program

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.

What will I be doing as a volunteer at Kidspace?

Volunteers at Kidspace have a unique opportunity to contribute in a variety of ways to the day-to-day operation of the museum. Every day is different; one day a volunteer may be asked to help with getting a mailing out or updating our email list, another day, the same volunteer may be assisting an educator in some part of the Museum such as the Gardens or the Digging Deeper Gallery. No matter how you end up spending your time here, your contribution is a valuable one!

How do I start volunteering?

To begin with, you need to fill out an application online and attend one of our volunteer orientations. If you are unable to fill out the online application, please contact Tim Scheidler at (626) 449-9144 x5201 so alternate arrangements can be made.

When are the orientations?

Orientations are held from 4:00pm to 5:00pm once per quarter here at Kidspace Children's Museum. During the orientation, volunteers fill out paperwork, receive a tour of the facility and gain understanding of how they will be participating as a volunteer at Kidspace.

How do I set up a time to volunteer?

Please contact Tim Scheidler with the specific dates and times at least one week prior to coming in to the Museum. Kidspace Children’s Museum is open from 9:30am-5:00pm from Tuesday thru Friday and 10:00am – 5:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. During the summer we are also open on Mondays from 9:30am-5:00pm. Some individuals arrange to volunteer on a regular basis while others come when their schedules permit.

What is the time commitment?

During your first quarter (three months) of service we require that you commit to serving at least 30 hours. This works out to be roughly 2.5 hours per week and is not a difficult feat by any means. Please note: If you are volunteering to complete service hours for school, Kidspace will not sign off on hours until your initial commitment of 30 hours has been completed. After your first quarter you must serve at least 15 hours each quarter after that to maintain an "active" status.

Please bear in mind that because volunteering at Kidspace requires a lot of energy, shifts longer than 4 hours are not encouraged. Accommodations can be made for longer shifts should the need arise.

Are there certain occasions when a group of volunteers is needed?

On a typical day we can accommodate a group no larger than five volunteers. There are specific events when we require up to 30 volunteers. These include our Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration; Snow Days; and the Pumpkin Festival. Please consult our calendar of events for any additional events in which you might be interested in volunteering.

What if I cannot come in on a day that I am scheduled?

We realize that things come up and plans do change. Please contact Kidspace as soon as you know you will not be able to come in. Leave a message on our sick line at (626) 449-9144, ext. 1003; please include your name, date and time you were scheduled to volunteer.

Can I bring a friend to volunteer?

Friends are welcome to volunteer as long as they fulfill the application and orientation requirement. Volunteers will be placed in different areas of the Museum to best suit our guest’s needs and to ensure that volunteers aren’t distracted by their fellow volunteers.

Is there a dress code?

Yes! We ask our volunteers to wear the following:
Tan pants or shorts, please no jeans or sweatpants. Shorts must be at least the length to your fingertips at your side.
Closed toe shoes.
Plain shirt - Please no pictures or words other than the Kidspace logo.
All volunteers will be asked to wear a volunteer badge and vest.

If Volunteers arrive out of dress code they will be sent home and no hours will be accumulated for that day.

What about iPods and cell phones?

Due to the interactive nature of the museum, we do not allow cell phones or musical devices on the floor.

How do I get to Kidspace?

Kidspace is located at 480 N. Arroyo Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91103, at the west end of Brookside Park near the Rose Bowl stadium. Free parking is available in Lot I, to the west end in Brookside Park near Rose Bowl. For more information please go to:

How do I receive a verification of my hours volunteered?

After you have completed your initial 30 hours of service we would be happy to sign off on any school forms you might have. If you require a log of your hours one can be provided for you.

Can my volunteer service ever be terminated?

Yes, we are very serious about holding all of our volunteers accountable to our Service of Excellence Code. Should you be found in violation of this code (not showing up or arriving late without calling, arriving out of dress code, poor attitude on the floor, etc.), you will receive three warnings. After your third warning your status as a volunteer in good-standing may be revoked and your service may be terminated at any time.
