Director of Development

The mission of Kidspace Children’s Museum is to engage families through hand-on exploration of our natural world.  Founded in 1979, Kidspace is the premier children’s museum in the greater Los Angeles region and annually serves approximately 225,000 children, families, and educators.

Job Summary: Responsible for developing short and long term goals and strategies to meet the fund raising needs of Kidspace.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement annual fund and major gift strategies
  • Brief and/or staff the CEO for donor cultivation and solicitation occasions
  • Coordinate volunteer committee(s) to maximize fund raising results
  • Oversee development and maintenance of prospect and donors files and database
  • Provide regular reports to the CEO and the Board
  • Develop strategies to identify, cultivate, and solicit major prospects
  • Institute a formalized stewardship and donor recognition program
  • Provide direction for the grant writer to target foundation, corporation, and institutional proposals
  • Coordinate any events relating to the development effort
  • Determine and oversee the design of promotional/marketing materials for development projects
  • Lead and mentor the development staff
  • As appropriate, represent Kidspace in the community and speak on behalf of its mission and goals
  • With the CEO, manage all development aspects of a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree

Fields of Expertise: Demonstration of successful development work resulting in significant gifts in a community non-profit setting in Southern California.  Experience in annual giving and major gifts, event planning, and staff supervision.  

Minimum Experience: 6 years in development

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

Kidspace benefits include health insurance and vacation.  Dental insurance and a 403(b) retirement plan are also available at the employee’s option.  This is a full-time exempt position.  No relocation provided.
