It’s February. Yes, it is February. The Solar New Year is old news, the Lunar New Year is coming, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, and elementary school students have passed the 100 day mark in this school year.

  • The month has 29 days in leap years, when the year number is divisible by four. In common years the month has 28 days. The next leap year will be in 2016.
  • February’s birthstone is the the Amethyst.
  • Its birth flower is the Viola (plant) and the Primrose.
  • February is Black History Month in The United States and Canada. Black History Month had its beginnings in 1926 in the United States. Begun in part by African-American Historian, Carter G. Woodsen, it was celebrated for one week during the second week of February. The first celebration of Black History Month occurred at Kent State University in February of 1970. Six years later, the expansion from a week-long celebration to a month-long celebration was recognized by the U.S. government.
  • February 14 is Valentine’s Day in the United States. Though not always in February, many countries celebrate Valentine’s Day, including: Sweden, Spain, Japan, and India. Valentine’s Day was first established in the year 500.
  • Abraham Lincoln’s birthday is February 12
  • George Washington’s birthday is February 22
  • February is National Bird-Feeding Month
