Performer Spotlight - Against The Flow DJ's
Noon Year's is just around the corner, and Kidspace Children's Museum is excited to introduce you to two of the DJ's who will help us countdown to the "Noon Year."
Introduce yourselves to our Kidspace readers!
DJ Bree: My name is DJ Bree!
DJ Amber: Hi! I'm DJ Amber a.k.a. DJ A++
How long have you been performing as a DJ?
DJ Bree: I have been working as a professional DJ for 14 years.
DJ Amber: About 11 years.
What first got you into music and working with kids?
DJ Bree: I have always loved music as a child, and always felt like a big kid, even as a grew older. In high school I got involved with theatre, and we did a children's play for our local library and it was a magical experience. It felt natural, like something I could do forever! After high school, I got a job at Disneyland which had been a long time dream of mine, and I was hooked!
DJ Amber: My mom always had music in her house and we used to sing loud together in the car on long drives, she is an amazing singer, but I didn't inherit her pipes only the rhythm and love of music. After having my first son so young and working at Disneyland working with kids was just fun and easy for me.
If someone was inspired to work in music or as a performer, what advice would you give them?
DJ Bree: My advice for anyone looking to work in the performing arts is that first of all, never let anyone tell you that you CAN'T do something. Believe in yourself and your talent. I would also say to ALWAYS think outside the box! There is never only one way to realize your dream. If you love music, study music. I wanted to be a musical theatre teacher, as fate would have it I ended up becoming a DJ entertaining wonderful families. Both paths involve working with Music and Children, same passion but with a different twist!!
DJ Amber: Always believe in yourself and always put your best foot forward, believe that you are amazing even if only while performing and you will be.
You are performing for Noon Year’s at Kidspace. Do you have any New Year’s traditions?
DJ Bree: My only tradition is trying to stay awake until midnight, and celebrate with family. But I now have a two year old little boy, so I'm sure I will be starting some new traditions to make the event more fun for him!
DJ Amber: I always watch the Pasadena Rose Parade, growing up we would spend the night on Colorado and watch it in the morning. Sometimes I still drive down in the morning to see it, but it's too cold for me to stay over night. Brrrr!
What other events do you do and where can we find you?
DJ Bree: We do all events, from School incentive parties, family dances, to birthdays, weddings and more! If there's a celebration with any level of entertainment, we can do it! You can find us on Facebook, ATF DJ Girls, or email for info at firstname.lastname@example.org.
DJ: Amber: All kinds of events. I'm great with kids events but I also really love to DJ for adults. Wherever you have a party I'm there and happy to bring more fun to it.
Last one! Kidspace’s new Storyteller Studio features a Reading Nook containing some of the favorite books of our staff from when they were younger. What was your favorite book when you were younger, what did you like about it?
DJ Bree: My favorite book as a child was the classic book Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. I loved it because it was a beautiful story about the never ending love between a Mommy and her son. And now I love to read it to my son. My little boy's favorite book is called Snuggle Puppy because it also talks about a Mother dog telling her puppy how much she loves him, and it comes with a song and I sing it to him as we read. We all love music in our home!
DJ Amber: My All time favorite Children's book came out when I was in high school and I read every single one as soon as it was released. Harry Potter. As a kid I loved to read anything creepy or scary like the Fear Street book series by R.L. Stine. My kids have really enjoyed reading The Magic Tree house series and when they were very little our favorite was The Icky Sticky Frog, my youngest Boy would always excitedly finish the ending.
