Behind the Scenes at Insect Lore

2900 Have you ever wondered where the caterpillars you adopt at Kidspace come from? Wonder no more -introducing Insect Lore! Delivering caterpillars by mail since 1969, Entomologist Carlos White and his wife, Pat, wanted to bring the joy of metamorphosis to kids and adults all over the United States. The Whites chose Painted Lady Butterflies because they can be found on every continent, except Antarctica! Painted Ladies are helpful for the environment too: they are pollinators, meaning they carry pollen from one flower to the next which is very important for flower and fruit reproduction. Pollinators are a vital part of our eco-system!

Insect Lore is located in Shafter, CA where we have our very own caterpillar nursery! Inside you’ll find a dedicated team of people who care for our Painted Lady Butterflies and their eggs! Did you know that a caterpillar’s first meal is its eggshell? A caterpillar eats its way out of its egg and then is ready to eat more! A baby caterpillar’s favorite activity is eating, consuming enough to grow up to 10 times their original size. 2903 This is why we include A LOT of food in our Cup of Caterpillars. It took our founders years to perfect the nutritious food found in Insect Lore's Cup of Caterpillars and it's a closely held secret that has been passed down from generation to generation.

In addition to our caterpillar nursery, we also have a one-of-a-kind Ladybug nursery! We have a team of “Ladybug Ladies” that care for and raise our Pink-Spotted Ladybugs. Ladybug larvae are tiny black bugs that look a bit like miniature alligators. They don’t develop their unique spots and red coloring until they emerge as adults. Their red color isn’t just for looks! It acts as a warning to predators that ladybugs have a very bitter taste.
