S. Mark Taper Foundation

Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC)

ALERT: Adults must wear socks in Early Childhood Learning Center. This is to ensure the safety of our children and cleanliness of the room. While children will not be required to wear socks in the space, adults are required to cover their feet. Socks are for purchase in the Busy Bee Store. We thank you in advance for your cooperation!

S. Mark Taper Foundation Early Childhood Learning Center is designed to inspire wonder, stimulate exploration and prompt interaction between children and their adults. Inspired by nature, this padded space will provide a variety of experiences through interactive exhibits geared towards children from birth to age 3. Crawlers and early walkers can enjoy the tactile nature of Shiny Stream, exploring different surfaces, climbing and sliding. Families can snuggle up for a story in the cozy Nuzzle Nests. Twisty Tunnels can move all around to create walls and tunnels for children to explore, and Wonder Woods provides objects of all shapes and sizes to stack, sort and play. Overhead, Shapes and Shadows mobile moves and sways, attracting interest from the smallest of guests. We welcome our youngest visitors and their adults to come and play in a space designed just for them!

What to Expect:

  • This is a no-shoe area, but adults must wear socks. Cubbies are provided for shoes and small bags in the entry area of the room.
  • If you forget your socks, you can buy $2 socks in the Busy Bee Store.
  • Please enjoy your drinks and snacks outside as there is no food or drinks allowed inside.
  • Be prepared to play and interact with your little one - children must always be with an adult.
  • Strollers must be left outside. Valuables should never be left unattended.
  • Is everyone in your party feeling well, including your little one? Read Kidspace's Health & Safety Statement.
  • This space is for our youngest guests aged 3 and under. Please plan ahead if you have older siblings visiting Kidspace with you. We recommend a second adult be available to enjoy other areas of the museum with them as you and your little one enjoy the S. Mark Taper Early Childhood Center. If this is not an option older siblings may attend the Early Childhood room with their 3 and under siblings provided they respect the rules and are mindful of this special space.  Please note that Kidspace reserves the right to ask any guest to exit the museum at any time for safety or behavior issues.

Music Time

(Daily 10:15am and 3:15pm)
Sing, dance, and play instruments with a Kidspace Facilitator as we make music together! Music making can be a dynamic social experience for early learners, and is also a conduit to language and literacy development and math and science skills. Music time offers children and their adults the opportunity to socialize with other children, hear and create new sounds of music, and explore their body movement through dance.

Story Time

(Daily 11:15am and 4:15pm)
Snuggle up with your child for story time as a Kidspace Educator reads stories both familiar and new. Research has shown that the single most important thing that a parent can do to help their children acquire language, prepare their child for school, and instill a love of learning for their child is to read to them.

Due to our Early Learner Programs, the S. Mark Taper Foundation Early Childhood Learning Center occasionally closes to public guests and may open later on weekdays to facilitate paid programming. When the S. Mark Taper Foundation Early Childhood Learning Center is closed, guests are invited to explore Kirby’s Kids Corner, our outdoor space for early learners.
