Meet Our Eastern Box Turtle: Sherman

Where is the Eastern Box Turtle from?

They are found throughout the eastern United States, from Maine down to Florida, and the eastern regions of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Their habitat includes a variety of vegetative areas that are often found near ponds, streams, or areas that experience heavy rainfall.

Why are they called a “box turtles”?

The common name “box turtle” comes from their unique ability to draw in their head and limbs and completely seal themselves shut. They are able to accomplish this by using a hinge on their plastron (bottom half of shell) that allows them to raise front and rear sections. This is how they primarily defend themselves from predators.

How big do they get?

Adults can average 4 -6 inches in shell length.

What does the Eastern Box Turtle eat?

Eastern box turtles are omnivores, meaning that they eat both animal and plant matter. They are known to eat a variety of things in the wild, such as local fruits, berries, mushrooms, flowers, grasses, etc. They can catch small prey like snails, worms, slugs and other various invertebrates. If the opportunity presents itself, they will eat small mammals too. At Kidspace, we feed Sherman a variety of insects and vegetables.

How long do they live?

Some have been recorded in the wild and captivity to have lived up to be 100 years old. However, the average lifespan is somewhere between 25-40 years of age due to the variable conditions in the wild and in captivity.
