Where is the Southern Alligator Lizard from?

It is a common lizard that can be found throughout the Pacific coast, (Washington, Oregon, California, and northern Baja California). They can be found in a variety of habitats which include grasslands, chaparral, and woodlands. Alligator lizards are also commonly found living in suburban area yards and garages.

How big to they get?

Adult alligator lizards average 12 inches in length (including its tail).

Are they diurnal (active by day) or nocturnal (active at night)?

They are diurnal, but when the weather is too warm, they can be seen late in the day around sunset.

How do they defend themselves?

When threatened by a predator, its main defensive mechanism is to drop its tail and leave it behind, still wiggling, to distract whatever predator is after it. This allows it to slip away. It will also resort to biting if needed.
