How to Make Egg Hunting Fun and Sustainable

Hunting for eggs is a favorite activity for little ones, (and not so little ones)! Not only is there a sense of accomplishment when filing a basket of shiny eggs, but there’s also the reward of opening them to find treats and treasures.

But what happens to all of those plastic eggs after the hunt? If you have the space, saving them for next year is a wonderful idea. However, if you want to be creative, here are some fun ways to reinvent your eggs.

• The classic “egg goblet.” Put two ends together with a glue dot, or other adhesive. This can be used as a mini planter (make sure to add a hole for drainage), a change holder, or a holder for special small trinkets.

• A magnet! Decorate your egg however you’d like. You can use leftover bits and bobs from art and craft making. Fill the inside of half an egg with quick dry clay, or putty. Add a magnet to the back, and you’re all set! These can make for fun, personalized gifts that your little one can give to friends and loved ones, or a nice keepsake to keep on your own fridge at home.

• A nature collection box. Reuse an egg carton, and plastic egg halves to make a collection box of favorite items found on walks or hikes.

Of course, there are other great options for egg hunting that don’t include any plastic. There are now a variety or wooden or paper eggs, as well as biodegradable eggs that can be used instead of plastic. Here at Kidspace, we offer egg recycle bins during Egg Hunt. Those will be used as creative resources in spaces like our Imagination Workshop.
